How You Can Become a Better Bowler!
For many people, bowling is a great way to spend time with friends and family. And that’s a great way to enjoy bowling, since we believe it’s the perfect sport for balancing good times and good company!
But for those of us who enjoy bowling for its own sake, we’re always searching for new ways to improve. So, to help out those bowlers who want to become the best they can be, we wanted to take this opportunity to discuss some tried and true bowling techniques. Today, we’re discussing 3 ways to improve your bowling game!
Tip #1: Whatever You Do, Be Consistent
Mastering anything is all about intentionality. Whether or not you mean to, you’ll naturally develop habits as you go about doing anything in life. That said, our habits don’t always come from what’s best. Sometimes, we unknowingly build habits around what’s easiest. So, if you want to improve at bowling, it’s essential that you’re intentional about building successful habits. Here’s what we recommend:
- Identify the habits you’ve already built up. You’ve probably already developed bowling habits, even if you didn’t mean to. The first step to consistency is figuring out what those habits are. Ask yourself: Where do you aim? How far back do you swing your arm? How are your feet positioned? How many steps do you take as you move forward?
- Figure out which habits you want to change. You might already have some healthy bowling habits, but you probably have some habits that aren’t very helpful. For instance, you may notice that you’re always putting a spin on your bowling ball.
- Change your habits through repetition. Now that you know which habits you want to change, focus on establishing better habits through constant practice. Over time, you’ll notice you’ve mastered the new habit!
Tip #2: Get Your Swing in Shape!
The magic of bowling is all in how you swing the bowling ball. Swinging a bowling ball should be one fluid, precise motion, and all the best bowlers have a swing that looks completely natural. To improve your swing, you’ll want to make sure you’re performing a pendulum-like swing with your arm, following through even after you release the ball.
Tip #3: Master Your Release for a Powerful Shot
One of the trickiest techniques to master is the release. To strengthen your release, you’ll want to focus on what we call the “release point.” In bowling, the release point is the exact moment when you release the ball, transferring your swing’s energy into the ball. Mastering the release point is the best way to get a powerful, precise shot every time!
Fundamentally, you can master your release point by releasing the bowling ball at the bottom of your swing, at the exact moment your arm starts to move upward. As you release, make sure to release your thumb first, then your fingers. That way, your fingers are “cradling” the bowling ball as you release it.
